Using dynamic ocean color provinces to elucidate drivers of North Sea hydrography and ecology

چکیده

Ocean biogeochemical provinces have historically been used to characterize regions of similar biogeography, allowing for large-scale comparisons and the definition possible management units. Recent studies shown that ocean color (OC) may be as a proxy range physical biological parameters, more direct approach in defining monitoring provinces. The current work investigates whether OC-derived (area given OC type) can identified North Sea if they provide insight into system's dynamics. analysis workflow was organized three main steps: 1. type classification based on clustering normalized reflectance spectra, 2. characterization following match-ups other covariates, 3. Exploration drivers province Based data from 1997–2019, four types were identified, which are related bio-optical, physical, zooplankton community covariates. Atlantic-associated varied their coverage seasonal interannual scales, with increased penetration periods weakened circulation. Interannual variability extent also found correlate an index Subpolar Gyre. These results indicate dynamics likely driven by interaction between circulation local wind-driven baroclinic currents. perspective offered helps elucidate spatiotemporal patterns plankton is proposed novel operational additional exploration ecosystem functioning.

Similar glacial and Holocene Southern Ocean hydrography

We present new Holocene and glacial dO data measured on planktonic foraminifera Neogloboquadrina pachyderma and benthic foraminifera Cibicidoides species from the Atlantic and Pacific sectors of the Southern Ocean in order to better understand its glacial hydrography. Combined with previously published data, the latitudinal dO distributions of these foraminifera show no appreciable difference d...

Monitoring Arctic Ocean Hydrography Using Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

Our goal is to greatly increase access to the Arctic Ocean by creating and demonstrating a safe and economical platform capable of basin-scale surveys. Specifically, we are developing a Autonomous Underwater Vehicle for Arctic research with unprecedented endurance, and the capability to relay data through the ice to satellites. We will provide a means of monitoring changes taking place in the A...

Drivers of surface ocean mercury concentrations and air-sea exchange in the West Atlantic Ocean.

Accurately characterizing net evasion of elemental mercury (Hg(0)) from marine systems is essential for understanding the global biogeochemical mercury (Hg) cycle and the pool of divalent Hg (Hg(II)) available for methylation. Few high resolution measurements of Hg(0) are presently available for constraining global and regional flux estimates and for understanding drivers of spatial and tempora...

Ocean Currents Modeling along the Iranian Coastline of the Oman Sea and the Northern Indian Ocean

The Makran Coast (Iranian Coastline of the Oman Sea on the Northern Indian Ocean) plays an important role in country’s future navigation and trade due to its accessibility. In 2014, the Iranian Makran coastline was selected by the PMO to be studied as the Phase 6 in the series of Monitoring and Modelling Studies of Iranian Coasts with all disciplines being in investigated including currents. Contrasting extracellular enzyme activities of particle-associated bacteria from distinct provinces of the North Atlantic Ocean

Microbial communities play a key role in the marine carbon cycle, processing much of phytoplankton-derived organic matter. The composition of these communities varies by depth, season, and location in the ocean; the functional consequences of these compositional variations for the carbon cycle are only beginning to be explored. We measured the abilities of microbial communities in the large-par...
